Pet Food

Are All Pet Foods Created Equal?

One of the biggest fallacies pertaining to the pet industry is that all foods are the same, except for the price. Many customers buy their food strictly on price, never considering any loss in value. Most comparison shoppers believe that a big bag of food bought for a small price is a job well done! Wrong!

Many commercial brands advertising a “great deal” are considerably more expensive when offered on an “as fed” basis. Some of these diets are composed of 79-90% filler or fibers, which means a great deal more must be consumed to equal comparable nutritional value. Many of the less expensive brands are found to have inconsistencies in product from bag to bag, as well as uncertainty regarding their primary ingredients. Comparing labels can be just as ambiguous, with top brands at opposite ends of the price spectrum, each offering an identical 22% protein content. Are you aware that hair and feathers can qualify as a protein source?

Product inconsistency can result in poor nutrition and eventual illness. A trip to the veterinarian will include a thorough examination, blood work, and possible additional diagnostics, often costing as much as $200-$300. That money could have been better invested on a quality diet, equating to a mere difference of $40-$50 per year!

So, how do you know which brand diet is best? You need to trust in your veterinarian’s expertise. In most cases, they have researched different brands and found one or more that they are comfortable with. Ask questions about his selections; make sure this choice fits with your pets’ needs.

Most veterinarians are not motivated to “sell” pet food, so their recommendations are made solely from concern for pet health and overall longevity. If only one brand is offered at your hospital, it is more likely one they feel strongly about, having no interest in carrying alternatives just to increase sales.

This is a very important part of the health care for your pet, and should always be discussed during your annual exams.
